Oh boy, these are not the best notes. It didn't help that I was on the floor in the back of the room- I missed a lot.
The guys who were on the panel are incredibly talented and they showed some beautiful examples of infographics. A few of the ones you'll see links for above.
Some notable things I missed after looking back at the #interinfo hashtag:
- I love this point by Ben Fry and will reference it if I ever do UX for data output: Don't start with the data or you'll end up with something that looks like data, start with the question or the problem.
- Shane Carter introducing himself from the NYTimes: "We still print a newspaper everyday, it's like a version of the website" - Shan Carter, NYTimes (@tysone)
- If you take a closer look into any of the examples listed in this post, you'll get this point very quickly: Ultimately, these info graphics allow you to process what would have taken hours to understand into seconds. (@chipcullen)
- Stamen coded their MTV visualization in such a way that it wouldn't work in IE - had to put up an 'OOPS!?' page. (@steeben) - hey, when the time starts crunching, you have to make do.
- Rudenbeck referencing data from Twitter: "Twitter's not going to lie to you." (@johnmorton) - Talking about pulling data from Twitter's API to show what people are talking about. Good examples of these include: NYTimes Superbowl Chatter, the MTV Awards visualization, and the Vancouver Olympic Tracker found here-http://www.nbcolympics.com/olympicpulse/tweet-tracker/index.html.
